We have an opportunity for you. The Canadian Journal of Autism Equity (CJAE) is looking for editors for our editorial board.

Voices of the disabled community have been consistently unaccounted for at decision-making tables that impact them, hinting at a larger problem of ableism in Canadian society. The journal was founded by the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorder Alliance (CASDA) in 2020 following both evidence and consensus that “we need to do better” at listening to Autistic voices and the voices of those who have been historically marginalized due to factors such as race, gender, disability, socioeconomic status, or geographic location.

Seeking authorship primarily by first-voice Autistic people and people with lived experience with both autism and intersectionality, the Journal seeks to offer a platform to amplify underrepresented voices and share their views with decision-makers and Canadians alike. As such, CJAE accepts a multitude of submission media including but not limited to: academic articles, poems, artwork, videos, podcasts, commentaries, and letters. CJAE publishes annually, during World Autism Month in April.

CJAE aims to build a strong reputation as an inclusive and critical agenda-setting outlet that publishes pieces on equity and inequity within the community. The Journal seeks an editorial team that will continue the tradition of informing Canadian decision-makers and amplifying Autistic and marginalized voices about issues of equity.

Criteria:

Must be on the Autism Spectrum.

We are looking for Autistics of all backgrounds. Preferences will be given to members of under-represented and equity-seeking groups (such as non-speakers, AAC users, racialized peoples).

At this time we have a specific need for a bilingual person (English/French) to fill a position on the editorial board. Translation experience is an asset.

Experience and comfort with social media or communications is an asset.

Please note that the current estimated time commitment that has been agreed to by current members is 3-5 hours of volunteer time per month.

Editorial Board members are expected to attend one meeting per month; this equates to 12 meetings per year. Board members who attend the meetings will receive $30 per meeting in compensation for their time.

Must have 2-3 years previous editorial experience, including but not limited to:

Evaluating submissions and selecting pieces to publish

Reading content and correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors

Rewriting text to improve readability

Collaborating with and supporting authors

Corresponding with external reviewers

Flagging articles or pieces that would be of interest to certain stakeholder groups (e.g., service providers)

Remuneration for editing services will be discussed upon hiring. Remuneration for translation and/or social media services will also be discussed.

A résumé (maximum 2 pages) must be provided with completed application. Those applications, if not completed in full, with accompanying résumés, will not be reviewed. Note: résumés, not CVs.

We will be accepting applications on an ongoing basis and reviewing them and filling positions as they become available. The starting commitment is for one year, with the option to renew up to four times. To apply, please fill out this Google Form with your information and resume: https://forms.gle/wLmSoq5Lvz5fX1eC6

Please note, our board internal meetings and processes are conducted in English, and meetings are held virtually via Zoom.

Contact us at CJAE.board@gmail.com if you require assistance in applying.

Sincerely,

The Canadian Journal of Autism Equity Editorial Board.
https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/cjae/announcement/view/68 Tue, 02 Aug 2022 17:04:17 +0000 CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS AND COVER ARTWORK FOR 2023 ISSUE! - Deadline Extension https://mulpress.mcmaster.ca/cjae/announcement/view/61
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS AND COVER ARTWORK

Special Edition: Autistics in decision making; the importance of lived experience; inclusion of first voices of autism in policy development

In the upcoming issue of the Canadian Journal of Autism Equity (CJAE), we would like to highlight pieces on the subject of the role of autistics in decision-making, inclusion of autistic voices in policy-making, and the overall importance of lived experiences. Furthermore, in the United States, research has also shown that Autistic adults who are working are also likely to be underemployed (Ohl et al., 2017). In this upcoming issue of the Canadian Journal of Autism Equity, we would like to highlight pieces on the subject of autism-related employment and equity. This can include narratives about one’s journey toward employment, work experiences, maintaining employment, going through the job interview process, barriers to employment or to access, discrimination in the workplace, accessing equitable supports in the workplace, going through vocational training programs or autism hiring initiatives, and more.
